For any homemaker, the master bedroom is a true sanctuary – allowing you to shed the stresses of life at the end of the day. It is here you should feel that you can shut the door behind you, and be comfortable and safe from your worries. The ultimate master bedroom should evoke luxury whilst remaining cosy and familiar.

If you’re wondering where to start, here are some design tips to help create an oasis of calm in our often busy world:

  1. Subtle colour – Bedrooms are soothing, comfortable spaces and therefore you should try and select delicate and graceful colour schemes to reflect their nature. Try opting for neutral colours such as creams and whites when painting walls. Pale pinks, baby blues and lavender can also work. Subtlety with colour doesn’t necessarily mean that your space has to be boring. If you are a fan of bold colours, you can add them, albeit in more concentrated spaces such as a throw pillow or bed spread.
  2. Keeping it relatively minimal – Ease of movement is important in evoking a sense of calm in your master bedroom. You don’t want it to feel cramped or for your movement to be obstructed with excessive furniture and clutter. It is especially important to consider the visual weight of your furniture. For example, if you’re dealing with a smaller space you may want to opt for a less bulky bed frame. Conversely if your master bedroom is on the more spacious side and has high ceilings, tall furniture is preferable so to draw the eye upwards and fill out the room ensuring dimensional cohesion.
  3. Good quality textiles – The importance of good quality textiles and soft furnishing in any bedroom should not be neglected – be that rugs, curtains or bedding. The bed is often the focal point of any master and thus selecting good quality bedding is paramount. When searching for brands it’s worth keeping functionality and luxury at the forefront. Bedding should be long-lasting, durable and comfortable. Bedding is also a great opportunity to experiment with different colours, patterns and textures. We love Daughters of Gaea – an ethical and sustainable homeware brand specialising in organic, hand-printed bedding.
  4. Layer your lighting – In order to create the perfect ambiance in your master bedroom it’s important not to rely solely on overhead lighting. Layering your lighting by having multiple light sources such as pendants, table lamps, reading lights and floor lamps which you can toggle between can help create the right atmosphere for any given mood or purpose.
